Happy birthday GIFs for WhatsApp

Download a GIF here, then send the file. Whether it stays animated depends on the app, the phone, and the path you use. These steps were checked recently.

Three different things people call a GIF

  • A GIF file is what you download from this site. It is animated.
  • A video is what some apps create when they re-encode that file to send it faster.
  • A sticker is a small animation saved inside WhatsApp. It is not the same file.

This site gives you the GIF file. It does not promise every chat app will keep the animation.

iPhone

  • Open a GIF and tap Download. It lands in Files or Downloads.
  • In WhatsApp, open the chat and tap the attach icon.
  • Choose Document, then the .gif file. Sending as a document is the path most likely to keep the animation.
  • If you pick it from Photos instead, check the preview. If it is still, send the document instead.

Android

  • Download the GIF. It usually goes to the Downloads folder.
  • In WhatsApp, attach a Document and pick the .gif.
  • The photo picker may convert it. If the preview is a still image, cancel and use Document.

Desktop

Download the file, then drag it into WhatsApp Web or the desktop app. If the preview is still, the mobile document path is more reliable.

iMessage and Instagram

iMessage often plays a GIF tapped from the photos picker, and sometimes converts a downloaded file to a video. Instagram DMs frequently turn GIFs into video. Watch the preview before you send. If it is still, say so in the message rather than assuming it moved.

If it will not animate

  • Open the downloaded file in a browser tab. If it moves there, the file is fine and the chat app converted it.
  • Send it as a document, not a photo.
  • On phones that support it, use Share on a gallery card and pick the app from the system sheet.
